Softball College world Series rundown
After three weeks of survive-and-advance softball, nearly a thousand innings played across more than 100 tournament games, the field of 64 is down to its final contenders in Oklahoma City for this year’s Women’s College World Series. Lucky for us, the entire tournament has been as fast-paced as we were expecting. Innings moved quickly, momentum shifted without warning, and the pitching was as top-notch as ever.
WHAT’S THE RUNDOWN ON WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOFTBALL?
Not just a tournament full of the usual suspects, first timers in Arkansas and Mississippi State made strong statements about the state of their programs. The Bulldogs pulled a massive upset in Super Regional play, ousting powerhouse Oklahoma. Softball glory can be short-lived, however, as they dropped an 8-0 mercy rule decision in their next game. The Razorbacks also proved they belong by pushing Nebraska in a 10-inning marathon, before ultimately losing on a walk-off homer.
But then there were the usual suspects with Alabama, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas & UCLA all making it to bracket play. Joining them was Texas Tech - not a newcomer, but not quite a usual suspect just yet. The Red Raiders continued their rise among the sport's elite by pushing top-seeded Alabama to a winner-take-all second semifinal game. Texas Tech then shut out the Crimson Tide in the nightcap of a doubleheader to advance to the championship series for the second consecutive season.
On the other side of the bracket, Texas completed one of the tournament's most impressive runs. After falling to Tennessee in the opening round, the defending champions found themselves having to climb through the loser’s bracket. The Longhorns responded by rattling off a series of elimination-game victories, including back-to-back wins over Tennessee, to get their revenge and secure their return to the championship series.
TEXAS VS TEXAS TECH REMATCH!
So we get our rematch of last year’s WCWS Championship Series! Texas is making its third straight appearance in the championship series and is looking to defend its national title. Texas Tech, meanwhile, is seeking the first championship in program history. The Red Raiders enter the series with one of the nation's most explosive offenses, while the Longhorns have relied on a combination of timely hitting, strong pitching, and dependable defense.
