What is Bar IX?

Bar IX (pronounced "Bar Nine") is Detroit’s first women’s sports bar—a warm, inclusive neighborhood space where fans of all levels of the game gather to cheer on women’s sports. Whether you're new to women's athletics or a lifelong supporter, you're welcome here. Our goal is to honor the legacy of Title IX and foster community through sports.

Why was Bar IX created?

We believe women’s sports deserve a permanent, dedicated space. While women’s sports are breaking viewership records and gaining popularity, most sports bars still default to men’s games. Bar IX is changing that by making women’s sports the default, not the exception, in Detroit and beyond.

Where is Bar IX located?

What types of sports and programming can I expect?

Will Bar IX only show women’s sports?

While our primary focus is women’s sports, we’ll occasionally show men’s games, especially when it comes to Detroit’s local teams. What makes us different is that women’s games will be the default, and fans won’t have to ask or fight to see them on TV.

Is Bar IX family-friendly?

Yes! Bar IX is designed as a community-friendly space where families, young fans, and multi-generational groups can cheer together in a supportive environment. We want young girls (and boys) to grow up seeing women athletes celebrated loudly and proudly. We're honoring those who paved the way and creating a space for new fans to join the legacy.

Absolutely! While final concepts are in development, our goal is to offer a welcoming bar experience; think great drinks (including plenty of non-alcoholic options), pop-up food collabs, and comfortable viewing for fans tuning in all day or evening. Stay tuned for more updates!

Can men come to the bar?

Yes! Bar IX is an inclusive community space not just for women, but for everyone who supports, watches, or celebrates women’s sports. Men, nonbinary folks, and people of all genders are warmly welcomed to join us.

Why is Detroit the home of Bar IX?

Detroit is our home and it’s the perfect place for Bar IX. From the return of a WNBA team to sell-out PWHL games and enthusiastic support for our pop-up events, Detroit has proven it’s ready for a space that is dedicated to women’s sports.

When will Bar IX open?

What does “Title IX victories” mean to Bar IX?

Title IX is the federal law passed in 1972 that revolutionized gender equality in education and athletics. That legislation opened the door for women (including those who inspired the Bar IX concept) to have the same athletic opportunities as men. Our name reflects that heritage: Bar IX celebrates how far we've come and where women athletes continue to shine.
